The Art of Sink Laundry

Jordan Steinfeld, Tel Aviv Israel

There are many different options when it comes to doing laundry while abroad, and of course your decision will ultimately be made based on personal taste and what makes sense in your region. That being said, knowing how to rock some sink laundry is always a useful skill to have in your arsenal.

note: sink laundry uses a lot of water, seriously works your forearms, tests your patience, and ages your clothes. As such I usually save sink laundry for very special occasions and my underpants

What you’ll need:

  • Dirty Clothes
  • Sink, Shower, or other receptacle (I've used a large tupperware container in the past)
  • A sink stopper (or some other way to stop your water from going down the drain)
  • A towel
  • Places to hang your clothes (make sure to find this before you begin)
  • At least 5 minutes per item to be washed
  • Plenty of drying time ...   [more]

Scholarship of the week: AYUSA Global Citizen Scholarship

Studying abroad can get expensive. I’ve been there and bought the t-shirt (I even have the student loans to prove it). The experience is worth it, especially if you qualify for some of the amazing scholarships that will minimize the extra costs. In this series of articles we’re focusing on some of the top scholarships for studying abroad (during your undergraduate degree, as a gap year and potential fellowships/scholarships for graduate and professional study). The competition for most of these is fierce so check out the run down and see if you qualify before spending the extra time and effort going through the application process.

This week let’s focus on the Ayusa Global Citizen Scholarship. This scholarship awards seven $2,000 scholarships to high school students who are “resourceful and mature and are passionate about international exchange, bettering their community and self-growth”.  Those chosen receive immediate credit of $1,000 to their program fees and receive the remaining $1,000 in a check after successfully completing the requirement of the scholarship and submitting your Photo Essay and Proof of Presentation Form.

The information on the 2013 -2014 scholarship is not currently available but the information for last year shows the online application and materials being due by March 1st followed by a completed program application to an Ayusa study abroad program by March 31st.

If you’re a high school student considering studying abroad this is definitely a program and scholarship opportunity to look into. Ayusa offers yearlong study abroad programs in:

  • France
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Ecuador
  • Austalia
  • Japan
  • Italy
  • China
  • Mexico

Ayusa academic year abroad programs range from $7,000 - $13,000 depending on where you want to study so this $2,000 can go a long way. This is definitely a program I wish I had known about as a high school student. Good luck!

How to Read the Swedish News

Jordan Steinfeld, Sweden

One of the best ways to prepare for your time abroad (and maintain a connection with your host country once you get home) is to read the local news. Many people do this by checking out the world section of the New York Times or Guardian, but you have to go beyond dailies with wide circulation to get in depth stories about day to day life.  By keeping up on current affairs you’ll not only understand local politics and issues but you’ll also get a feel for local culture and have something interesting to chat with your produce guy about. If you are exceptionally fluent or looking for some in-depth language practice then hit up the local papers. If, on the other hand, you’re looking to breeze through the news without once picking up your dictionary, your best option is to find a version of the local paper in English. Here are some ways to keep up with local news in Sweden:

The Local is the only proper Swedish English language news site that I know about and, frankly, it’s not the best news source in the world. It offers a little bit of everything in terms of hard news and culture and features major news stories from all over Sweden.  I do really like that it seems to know its audience, there are plenty of sections that deal with history and resources for foreigners in Sweden. One really excellent attribute of the paper is its translation feature; simply by double clicking you can translate any word on the site from English to Swedish. This is immensely helpful for language practice and can help you better understand conversations you may overhear on a day-to-day basis.

If you are going to Stockholm then feel free to check out Stockholm News for stories that relate specifically to the capital.  There are also a few questionable seeming offerings from the world press such as Sweden Globe and Scandanavia Press, if you’re really feeling the need to read up on things.

All in all it seems your best bet is to start loving The Local or quickly learn some Swedish and start in on the Gothenburg Post, Svenska Dagbladet, or the Sydvenskan depending on where in the country you find yourself.

From the Archive: How to Fill Out Your Study Abroad Application

Graphic by: Jordan Steinfeld

Its that time of year again. As if midterms weren’t enough, you’re already late for filling out your study abroad applications…balls! Don’t worry; we’re here to help. Before you go any further, make sure your program is still accepting candidates and that you have a good handle on what your particular university requires from its students who want to go abroad (this is different everywhere). Once all of that is taken care of all you have left is filling out the application and, trust me, it’s not as difficult as you think it is. ...   [more]

Indelible Guide to Resume Language

You’ve come back, gone through (or are currently going through) the overwhelming reentry experience and now it’s time to write your resume. Daunting task, no? Especially when it comes to putting all of the skills, life experiences and strengths you’ve obtained while abroad into a competitive resume.

In order to stand out from the crowd of recent graduates looking for a job you’re going to have to go a bit outside of the box The University of Texas provides a quick reference of appropriate resume terms for anthropological abilities some of which also accurately describe skills learned as a result of studying, interning, or volunteering abroad.

Social agility - being able to quickly size up the “rules of the game” in unfamiliar social or career-related settings

Social Sensitivity - knowing the importance of events and conditions contribute to the different way people do things.  An understanding that cultural differences affect behavior and what is considered the norm.

Problem Solving - You know to approach problems with care and have learned the intricacies of working within a group of culturally diverse people. You know to identify problems, set goals and decide upon actions then calculate the possible effects on people involved.

These skills are a few of the many anthropological terms that help express the multitude of social, linguistic and logistic skills obtained during your journeys. In addition to them your experiences have strengthened your:

  • Flexibility and Patience
  •  Self Reliance and Self Knowledge
  • Foreign Language Proficiency
  • Stress Management
  • Perseverance
  • Independence
  • Organization and Time Management

These skills are integral parts of your experiences and as applicable to the position you are attempting to obtain may become key skill sets in your resume.
