In a move that made a million American parents say “That’s it, now you’re really not going” the US State Department issued a “Worldwide Caution” on 26 July 2011. I am here to tell you that, while I will never downplay the importance of travel advisories or remaining vigilant (both at home and overseas,) this broad strokes advisory should in no way impact your decision to study abroad. A closer read reveals that this advisory is just the latest in a string of warnings meant to remind American travelers that our foreign policy doesn’t always make us the most popular guests in the hostel.
Before going abroad, it is definitely important to make sure you are well acquainted with the realities of the world you are venturing in to. Reading this advisory will bring you at least one step closer to that ideal. It also serves as a great reminder that you should register with the State Department before every trip, without fail.
