Finding a job or volunteer position abroad can be a difficult process especially with the increasing number of scams out there promising the position of your dreams. In looking for a position abroad you are opening yourself up for the possibility of being scammed but there are some things you can due to safeguard yourself and avoid falling victim to a scam.

  1. If a position or job looks too good to be true, it just might be. Follow your gut instincts and be cautious in what you apply for especially if the application asks invasive questions or asks for money.
  1. If the company or organization offers to obtain your visa or work permit for a fee double check with the country’s embassy to see if this a secure process or if, as is the case with the U.K. and many other countries, visas and work permits are only obtainable through the country’s border agencies.
  1. Research any company or organization requesting a fee for processing your information of application. This means looking up third party information on the company/organization not just information on its own site. If the information available sends up any red flags or isn’t abundant contact the country’s embassy to see if it brings up any red flags.
  1. Be very cautious in the amount of personal information you submit to a company/organization you’ve just applied to. Personal information such as physical address and/or social security information may be needed in the hiring process but should not be required in the first round application.

If you suspect you’ve fallen victim to scam contact the country’s embassy and ask which law enforcement agency you should contact. We’ve found them to be very helpful in past and often respond quickly to such requests. Most importantly, remember not to get too down on yourself if it turns out you’ve been scammed and not only don’t have a job waiting for you but have also lost out on money you can’t get back. We all make mistakes and the important thing to remember is that life goes on, it could have been worse, and you now have a really crazy story to tell people at parties.

safety, scams, things that totally suck, things that the internet makes easier
